Choice Advantage hotels: where labor hours actually go
· updated September 9, 2026 · housekeeping, pms, labor planning
Choice Advantage is Choice Hotels’ proprietary PMS, run by its franchised Quality Inn, Comfort Inn, Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn and Sleep Inn properties. Whatever system runs the front desk, the labor-cost problem underneath is the same one: cost tracks room count only when staffing is actually matched to it, day by day — otherwise a slow week and a busy week end up carrying the same payroll.
What actually moves labor cost
For a hotel in the 20-to-120-room range, labor is usually the single largest cost line an owner can still influence day to day — more controllable than debt service or utilities, and far more sensitive to bad scheduling than most people assume. Three things move it more than anything else:
- Staffing to the day’s actual room list, not last week’s average. A schedule built off Monday’s occupancy is already wrong by Thursday.
- Overtime that creeps in unnoticed. A few extra minutes a day per employee, uncaught, adds up to a full shift’s worth of premium pay by the end of a pay period.
- Paid hours that don’t match worked hours. Rounding, buddy punching and hand-kept timesheets all drift the same direction — toward paying for time that wasn’t actually worked.
What to look for in a labor cost tool
Not every time clock or scheduling tool actually moves these numbers. The ones that do share a few traits worth checking for before buying one:
- Reports cost per occupied room, not just a total. A $9,000 payroll week means something different at 90% occupancy than at 55% — see what MPOR is and how to compute it.
- Gets overtime right without a spreadsheet — daily, weekly and double-time thresholds, computed automatically, in the property’s own timezone rather than wherever the head office happens to be.
- Turns today’s room list into tomorrow’s schedule, instead of asking someone to retype a report by hand every morning.
- Verifies punches are actually happening at the property — geofenced, not just an honor system.
From Choice Advantage’s room report to tomorrow’s schedule
Choice Advantage’s housekeeping or room-status report is the input here, not something a labor cost tool needs to replace. Export it — most PMS reports come out as, or can be saved as, a CSV — and it imports directly into ProfitClock, previewed before anything writes, turning today’s actual checkouts and stayovers into tomorrow’s staffing plan instead of a spreadsheet nobody keeps current. CSV import works the same way no matter which PMS a property runs, which is the point: it doesn’t wait on a vendor-specific integration, and the preview catches a mismatched column before anything writes. FAQ
Does ProfitClock replace Choice Advantage? No. Choice Advantage keeps running reservations, folios and room status; ProfitClock handles staff time & attendance, scheduling and labor-cost reporting on top of it.
How often do I need to re-import the Choice Advantage report? Once a day is enough for most properties — pull it in the morning, and today’s actual room list becomes today’s staffing plan.
Does this work across a portfolio that runs Choice Advantage at some properties and a different PMS at others? Yes. CSV import works the same way regardless of which PMS a given property runs, so a mixed-PMS portfolio still reports labor cost the same way across every property.
Is this a live, real-time connection to Choice Advantage? No — it’s an import you run when you have a report ready, not a two-way sync. That’s a deliberate tradeoff: it works with any PMS’s export today, rather than waiting on a certified integration with one.
